WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 | 8:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Schedule of Events:
· 7:00 a.m. – Participant registration begins
· 8:45 a.m. – Welcome Address by PGFD Chief Marc Bashoor and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation
· 9:05 a.m. – Stair Climb begins*
*9:05 a.m. signifies the exact time that the first call was received by FDNY on Sept. 11, 2001.
WHERE: Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, 201 Waterfront Street, National Harbor, MD
*The Stair Climb will take place at the Convention Center entrance, at the rear of the hotel next to the Self-Parking Garage.
WHO: The Prince George’s County Fire Department will host the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb. Participants will include regional firefighters and civilians – many firefighters’ spouses and children will participate as well. More than 100 stair climbers are expected to participate.
HOW: Participants will climb one of Gaylord National’s interior 10-story stairwells a total of 11 times to equal the 110 stories climbed by FDNY firefighters on Sept. 11, 2001. Some firefighters will wear full fire gear and carry hoses and air packs to make the experience as realistic as possible. Each climber will carry the photo and biographical sketch of a firefighter who was lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
WHY: To honor and remember the fire heroes lost on Sept. 11, 2001. All event proceeds will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
(A 5K Walk will also take place concurrently throughout National Harbor for those participants who do not wish to climb the stairs.)

What is the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb?
On or around the Sept. 11th anniversary every year, fire service members convene in high-rise buildings throughout the U.S. to climb 110 stories as a tribute to their fallen brothers. Some use air packs or carry hoses; many are in full gear. Each climber carries the photograph and biographical sketch of a firefighter who was lost on September 11, 2001. The events benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb is not a race, but an opportunity to honor and remember the 343 FDNY members who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live.
The first stair climb held to support the mission of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was held on September 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb 110 flights of stairs in memory of their FDNY brothers. The Denver 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb has evolved into a much anticipated annual event, and generated interest from individuals across the country who have adapted the format and hosted an event in their cities. In 2012, more than 35 different 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb events are scheduled to take place throughout the United States.
